Southwest Community Health Center to Celebrate 50 Years of Healthcare for All at Golden Gala
S For Story/10702811
Southwest Community Health Center, Inc. will commemorate its 50th anniversary with the Golden Gala on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at The Patterson Club in Fairfield.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - s4story -- The event will bring together community members, healthcare leaders, partners, employees, current leadership, longtime advocates, supporters and friends of Southwest for an evening celebrating 50 years of care, impact and community. Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner, an online auction, live entertainment, and an awards ceremony recognizing individuals and organizations that have helped advance Southwest's work over the past five decades.
More than a milestone celebration, the Golden Gala will recognize the community-driven vision that gave rise to Southwest Community Health Center—and the continuing need to make high-quality healthcare accessible to everyone.
A Community-Built Response to an Urgent Need
Southwest's story began in Bridgeport's West End during a period of profound economic and social change. As factories closed and healthcare services increasingly moved into surrounding suburbs, residents without reliable transportation faced growing barriers to receiving care.
In 1976, residents and local leaders formed the West End Neighborhood Advisory Council and secured federal funding to create a community-governed healthcare organization. The following year, a clinic opened inside Building 14 of the P.T. Barnum Apartments.
More on S For Story
The clinic quickly outgrew its original space and moved to the former St. Stephen's School on Bird Street in 1978. By 1980, it was officially incorporated as Southwest Community Health Center.
"Southwest began with a community that saw a need and chose to act," said Mollie Melbourne, CEO of Southwest. "The Golden Gala is a celebration of that legacy—of the patients, advocates, caregivers, partners and supporters who have helped make quality healthcare more accessible across Greater Bridgeport for five decades."
Over the following decades, Southwest expanded throughout Bridgeport, adding medical, dental, behavioral health and community-based services. Today, its network includes neighborhood health centers, school-based services, Same Day Care, programs for people experiencing homelessness and a mobile medical unit. Southwest will continue that expansion in late 2026 with a new location at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club's Madison Avenue Clubhouse. A full timeline of Southwest's history can be found here.
Throughout that growth, the founding idea has remained unchanged: healthcare should be available to all, regardless of income, insurance status or circumstance.
Supporting the Next Chapter
Proceeds from the Golden Gala will support Southwest's continued expansion of health services for the Greater Bridgeport community. Tickets are $175 per person and must be purchased in advance. Ticket sales close Friday, September 25, 2026.

Community members and organizations can support Southwest's next chapter in several ways: become a Golden Gala sponsor, contribute an item or experience to the online auction, or make a commemorative gift through Southwest's $50 for 50 campaign. Each contribution helps Southwest expand access to essential health services and carry its community-built mission into the next 50 years.
