Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Immediate Special Session Agenda

~ Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the commencement of Special Session #1, which will begin at 9:00 PM on Monday, May 29. The Governor has identified a number of agenda items for the session, including cutting property taxes and cracking down on illegal human smuggling.

In a statement, Governor Abbott said that Texans need and want a path towards eliminating property taxes. He proposed directing property tax reduction dollars to cut school property tax rates as the best way to do this.

The Governor also outlined other agenda items for the special session, such as ending COVID restrictions and mandates; providing more than $5.1 billion to secure the border and fund the Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the border wall; designating Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations; prosecuting fentanyl deaths as murder; protecting women's sports and female collegiate athletes; focusing community colleges on preparing Texas students for high skill careers; increasing electric power generation to secure the Texas power grid; holding rogue district attorneys accountable; protecting children from life-altering gender mutilation; banning illegal DEI hiring practices in our colleges and universities; adding $1.4 billion to make Texas schools safer; requiring armed security at all schools; providing access to mental healthcare for students at all schools; and requiring regular safety checks of school buildings.

The Governor noted that more must be done for Texans, but that several special sessions will be required in order to ensure each priority receives enough time and attention to pass into law.

Special Session #1 will focus solely on cutting property taxes and cracking down on illegal human smuggling. The Governor is hopeful that this session will provide lasting property-tax relief for Texans taxpayers.
