~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that five schools in the San Antonio area have been awarded career training grants totaling over $1,531,600. These grants, known as Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, are aimed at providing students with the necessary skills and training for high-demand and well-paying jobs after graduation.

The grants, which were awarded through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), will support career and technical education (CTE) programs by helping schools purchase and install equipment to train over 650 students in occupations such as software developers, nurses, welders, and more.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the future workforce of Texas as the state's economy continues to grow. He stated that these grants will provide students in the San Antonio area with opportunities to secure better jobs and higher pay after graduation. The governor also expressed his gratitude to TWC for their efforts in strengthening the highly skilled workforce of Texas.

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel echoed Governor Abbott's sentiments, stating that the JET program provides students with cutting-edge technology to prepare them for high-demand occupations. He also highlighted TWC's commitment to supporting CTE training across the state to meet the diverse needs of Texas industries.

The awards were presented earlier today by TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, as well as school staff at San Antonio College's Nursing & Allied Health Complex.

The five JET grants include a $332,507 grant for Alamo Colleges District-San Antonio College to train 250 students as software developers; a $319,709 grant for Boerne Independent School District (ISD) to train 200 students as registered nurses in partnership with Alamo Colleges District-San Antonio College; a $350,000 grant for Cotulla ISD to train 25 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with Southwest Texas Junior College; a $179,403 grant for Dilley ISD to train 76 students as welders in partnership with Southwest Texas Junior College; and a $350,000 grant for Harmony Schools South Texas to train 100 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with Texas Southmost College.

Funded by the Texas Legislature every two years, TWC's JET grants aim to cover start-up costs for developing or expanding CTE programs in public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for high-demand occupations. The JET grant awards for the current fiscal year are yet to be announced and will be made public in the coming months.
