Free Community Event Commemorates the 161st Anniversary of Juneteenth
HOUSTON - s4story -- In honor of the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, Nia's Daughters Movement Collective and Nia Cultural Center, produced by Elevate Experiences, proudly present the 2nd Annual Official Juneteenth Return on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the historic Absolute Equality Mural, located at 2217 The Strand in Galveston, Texas.
Created as an annual pilgrimage back to the birthplace of Juneteenth, the free community event invites attendees to gather at the site where freedom was first proclaimed in Texas. Set against the backdrop of Galveston's iconic Absolute Equality Mural, the experience will feature live music, dance, storytelling, and cultural expression while honoring one of the most significant moments in Black history.
Galveston holds a significant place in Black history as the city where General Order No. 3 was issued on June 19, 1865, informing enslaved African Americans in Texas that they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. More than a century and a half later, The Official Juneteenth Return continues to bring people back to the place where freedom's delayed promise finally arrived.

A featured highlight of this year's celebration will be the premiere of From Gorée to Galveston: Diaspora Cycling, a new work by Houston choreographer, educator, and scholar Shani Diouf. Through movement and storytelling, the performance explores the enduring cultural connections between West Africa, Galveston, and communities throughout the African Diaspora.
"It is an incredible honor to produce the 2nd Annual Official Juneteenth Return," said Stacey Allen, Founder and Artistic Director of Nia's Daughters Movement Collective. "In honor of many pilgrimages before, we invite everyone to come back to the birthplace of Juneteenth to reflect, lament, and celebrate with us."
What began as a commemorative gathering has evolved into an annual tradition, drawing visitors from across Texas and beyond back to Galveston to honor the legacy of freedom, resilience, and community.
