Two Cousins Rethink How America's Gas Stations Are Run
S For Story/10704701
Abdullah Khalidi and Shoeb Ikram are building a more modern operating model for independent fuel retailers, blending technology with hands-on management support.
LOS ANGELES - s4story -- Gas stations are among the most familiar businesses in America, but much of what happens behind the counter is still surprisingly manual.
For independent operators, running a station can mean managing employees, tracking inventory, reconciling sales, coordinating vendors, monitoring fuel operations and handling compliance across several disconnected systems.
Abdullah Khalidi and Shoeb Ikram believe there is a better way.
The cousins are building WRK Fuels around a simple idea: give independent gas station owners access to modern back-office technology, intelligent automation and operational support.
Rather than offering software alone, the company combines reporting and business visibility with services ranging from staffing and vendor coordination to inventory oversight and management support.
"We kept seeing the same problem," Khalidi said. "Owners had information coming from different places, but they were still spending too much of their time managing the day-to-day."

That gap became the foundation for WRK Fuels.
The company is positioning itself between traditional back-office software and full-service station management, with the goal of giving owners greater visibility while reducing the time they spend handling routine operational issues.
Independent fuel retailers have increasingly adopted digital systems for point-of-sale, reporting and inventory, but many still rely on fragmented processes, manual reconciliation and constant owner involvement.
WRK Fuels is designed around reducing that friction.
Its services can include back-office reporting, employee scheduling and staffing support, vendor coordination, inventory management, store inspections, operational oversight and fuel retail consulting.
At the center of the model is a cloud-based back-office platform intended to give operators a clearer view of store performance while allowing WRK Fuels to support portions of the operation remotely.
"The opportunity isn't just in giving owners better software," Ikram said. "It's in helping them build an operation that can run more efficiently without everything depending on them every single day."

Khalidi, whose background includes work in artificial intelligence and technology, sees AI as an increasingly important part of that model.
"I see AI becoming a major part of how fuel retail is managed," Khalidi said. "Our goal is to bring more intelligence into the back office, automate repetitive operational work and help owners make faster, better-informed decisions without adding more complexity."
For Khalidi and Ikram, the opportunity is less about reinventing the gas station and more about modernizing the infrastructure behind it.
Instead of focusing solely on software subscriptions, WRK Fuels is building around a combination of technology, consulting and operational services that can be adapted to different types of station owners.
As the company expands its work with independent fuel retailers, the cousins are focused on refining a model that combines software, AI, visibility and hands-on operational support.
For Khalidi and Ikram, the larger ambition is straightforward: modernize the business behind the pumps.
