BALTIMORE - s4story -- Yannis Charles, a trailblazing student-athlete from Morgan State University, has rewritten history in collegiate wrestling. At the prestigious EIWA (Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) Qualifiers, Charles became the first wrestler to advance to the tournament as the 12th seed and finish in second place, earning a coveted spot in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship. Entering the national tournament as the 33rd seed, Charles carried with him the hopes of Morgan State and the broader wrestling community.
Charles's NCAA Division I qualification is the first for an HBCU in 27 years, reigniting a legacy of athletic excellence at institutions historically underrepresented in the sport. His achievement alone was historic, but he did not stop there.
In a defining moment, Yannis Charles became the first Morgan State wrestler to win an NCAA match. Remarkably, he achieved this milestone despite entering the tournament with a losing record, demonstrating unmatched grit, determination, and a champion's spirit that transcends numbers.
