War, Counterculture, and Identity: Lowell Hamilton's Novel Revisits the Turbulent 1960s
S For Story/10688044
BROWNSVILLE, Texas - s4story -- The 1960s are often remembered for music, protests, and the Cultural Revolution. Yet beyond the headlines, the decade was also shaped by high-stakes military operations far from public view. In the novel Men, Wars, and Sex of the 60's, author Lowell Hamilton follows the journey of Rudy Ray Wilfang, a young man from East Tennessee who joins the Air Force at seventeen to escape the cycle of rural poverty.
The story offers a rare perspective on Operation Dragon Rouge, the 1964 "Top Secret" mission to rescue hostages from Simba rebels in the Congo. Hamilton brings readers into the intensity of jungle warfare while exploring the tense geopolitical climate of a world that often felt on the brink of crisis. These experiences unfold alongside a changing America, beginning with the national shock of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, an event many saw as the end of an era.
As Rudy moves through these defining moments, the novel examines the inner struggle of a generation Hamilton describes as "human wire monkeys," individuals sustained by the system yet searching for deeper emotional and spiritual grounding. From the discipline of military life to the countercultural rebellion of San Francisco's flower-power movement, Men, Wars, and Sex of the 60's explores the personal cost of living through a world in rapid transformation.

About the Author
Lowell Hamilton grew up in the same "neck of the woods" as Dolly Parton, running barefoot through the hills of East Tennessee and forming a unique view of life that was spiritual, sexual, and political. At seventeen, he joined the Air Force, having never carried on a conversation with a Black person and rarely seeing anyone outside his Caucasian community. The Air Force taught him to march and how to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Before he left, his grandmother gave him advice: don't start smoking, don't start drinking, don't get any tattoos, and don't bring a Catholic woman back here. He now writes fiction that explores pivotal moments in history and their cultural impact.
