AURORA, Colo. - s4story -- Alexander Lee Nieves Revives Puerto Rican Pride in Colorado with "Viva La Isla Del Encanto" Festival and City-Proclaimed Island of Enchantment Day

Aurora, CO – What began as a childhood tradition for Alexander Lee Nieves, attending Denver's "A Taste of Puerto Rico," has evolved into a cultural movement. When the beloved event was shut down, Alexander—raised by a single mother, Jessica Nieves, alongside his twin brother Zachary and grandmother Carol—stepped up. Though not Puerto Rican himself, Alexander, whose wife is, created Viva La Isla Del Encanto Festival to continue celebrating the spirit of Boricua culture in Colorado.

With the help of his nonprofit Nieves Ministries and the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Colorado, the festival now serves thousands. And in a landmark moment, the City of Aurora officially proclaimed July 26, 2025, as "Island of Enchantment Day," signed by Mayor Mike Coffman.
