The importance of fertilizer availability was highlighted on June 29, 2026, when President Donald J. Trump declared a national emergency concerning threats to U.S. fertilizer supplies. In the proclamation, President Trump stated, "Fertilizers are an essential component of agriculture and food production," citing global supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and procurement challenges affecting American agriculture.

The company's technology is based on plasma-activated water, inspired by the natural reactions that occur during lightning storms. By creating a controlled version of this process, Lightning Water is evaluating how plasma-activated water can support healthier growing environments and improve agricultural efficiency.
"Our vision is simple," said John Russo, Co-Founder of Lightning Water. "Nature has spent millions of years perfecting its systems. Rather than working against them, we are looking at how we can learn from those systems and apply that knowledge to some of agriculture's most difficult challenges."
The company is not positioning its technology as a replacement for conventional fertilizers. Instead, Lightning Water is studying how plasma-activated water can complement existing growing programs, reduce dependence on certain traditional inputs, and provide growers with additional tools to improve productivity.
Lightning Water is also evaluating the technology's potential role in food safety and microbial management. Published research on plasma-activated water and related plasma-based water treatment systems has demonstrated activity against several foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, and Campylobacter species. Researchers have also reported potential applications for produce washing, irrigation, equipment sanitation, and post-harvest handling, although additional validation under commercial growing conditions is needed.
