Inspired by his non-verbal autistic daughter, author Robbie Barnes launches a sensory-friendly picture book series that promotes sibling connection, neurodiversity, and inclusive storytelling.

SOUTH SHIELDS, U.K. - s4story -- Jarrow, UK – Author Robbie Barnes has launched a heartfelt Kickstarter campaign to fund Sofia & Cleo, a gentle, inclusive children's picture book series inspired by his real-life daughters — one of whom is autistic and non-verbal.

Created to promote autism acceptance, neurodivergent representation, and meaningful sibling relationships, the books follow Sofia, a quiet, sensory-sensitive girl, and her bubbly sister Cleo. Each story captures their day-to-day moments — from exploring nature to facing big emotions — in a calm, accessible way that welcomes all children, including those with sensory needs or non-verbal communication styles.

"I wanted stories that reflect how my girls connect with each other, even without words," says Barnes. "There's so much beauty in quiet understanding. These are stories about love, not limits."

With a tone that is gentle, emotionally supportive, and rich in visual storytelling, Sofia & Cleo is one of the few own-voice autism stories aimed at the early years. Every book is designed to be sensory-friendly, using soft language, repetitive phrasing, and calm pacing to support young readers of all abilities.

The Kickstarter campaign is aiming to raise £3,000 through an all-or-nothing model, meaning funds will only be collected if the goal is fully met. At the time of writing, over £1,520 has already been pledged, with 28 days still to go — demonstrating strong early support for this inclusive series.

Backers can choose from a range of exclusive rewards including early access to books, thank-you bundles, and signed collector editions.
