Cryolab Publishes Complete Guide to Cryogenic PPE for Liquid Nitrogen Work
S For Story/10706947
A task by task guide for IVF, biobank and research laboratories covering face shields, cryogenic gloves, aprons and footwear, and how to fit, inspect, store and replace PPE.
WEST SUSSEX, U.K. - s4story -- Cryolab Ltd, the Chichester based cryogenic equipment supplier serving IVF clinics, biobanks and research laboratories worldwide, has published a practical guide to complete cryogenic PPE for liquid nitrogen work.
The guide starts from a simple observation: most cryogenic injuries are not caused by missing PPE, but by the right item being the wrong size, worn the wrong way, worn out, or skipped because the job was only a quick top up.
What the law expects
In Great Britain, the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require employers to provide PPE free of charge where a risk assessment shows it is needed. HSE guidance says PPE must be assessed as fit for purpose, that workers need sufficient information, instruction and training, and that PPE must be looked after and stored properly. Since the 2022 amendment these duties also extend to limb (b) workers.
More on S For Story
The complete set
The guide sets out a face shield worn over safety glasses for any work over open liquid nitrogen, cryogenic gloves chosen by length from wrist to shoulder, a waterproof apron long enough to finish below the top of the boot, and closed, non absorbent footwear with trousers worn outside the boot.
Protection by task
Bench handling of frozen samples, working in storage vessels, decanting and charging dry shippers each need a different level of protection, and the guide recommends writing PPE requirements task by task. It also stresses that PPE protects against cold, not against an oxygen deficient atmosphere, so nobody should enter a room with an active oxygen alarm.
Fit, inspection and replacement
Gloves should be loose enough to throw off in one movement, checked before each use, stored dry and away from vessels, and replaced on a schedule, with spares kept in every size.
