Debut Author Charts his Nephew's Journey Through Cancer Treatment in New Picture Book
S For Story/10505252
TYNE AND WEAR, U.K. - s4story -- When James Flynn's nephew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, it hit his whole family hard. They felt the helplessness that people feel when a loved one is in trouble but there seems little they can do. However, visiting his nephew in the Children's Cancer Unit of his local Royal Victoria Infirmary, and seeing the expert care that he was being given, James vowed to raise money to help this amazing unit. Thus his book Captain Theo and the Nasty Pirate was born.
The story, with its upbeat tone, cleverly charts life with cancer through subtle references that those who have been along this journey will recognise. For example, the port where the ships dock is called Port A-Cath, mimicking the intravenous line through which a cancer patient receives their chemotherapy.

Dan Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing, says, "To be honest, I wasn't expecting a great book, but when I heard the background, I was set to help James produce it. But his experiences had clearly brought out the latent author in him and he presented me with a book that I was happy to have on our children's list. Not only was it a good story, he had also got an excellent illustrator on board. The end result is a picture book to be proud of."
Captain Theo and the Nasty Pirate was launched 20th October 2021.
Not only does the book have an upbeat ending, so does the story behind it. James's nephew has come through treatment and is hopefully on the way to a full recovery.
