Charlotte's rich history dates back to the mid1700s. It was named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German wife of England's King George III. What began as a small courthouse town has grown into one of the largest cities in the United States.

Award-winning journalist Ashley Mahoney invites you on a journey through the city's history in Historic Maps of Charlotte. Some stops along the way no longer exist, like Good Samaritan Hospital, Lakewood Park, and the Charlotte Coliseum where the Charlotte Hornets played. About the Author: Ashley Mahoney is an award-winning journalist based in Charlotte. Many of the subjects explored in Historic Maps of Charlotte, from Camp North End to Independence Park, have been part of her coverage for Axios Charlotte and the Charlotte Post. These are some of her favorite places to explore with her husband, Danny. Historic Maps of Charlotte allowed her to combine her skills as a journalist with her degrees in history and English. She is delighted that her first book focuses on the history of the city she has called home for more than a decade.
