Rather than painting familiar Western clichés, Cain turns toward Texas water and sky: Austin's Lady Bird Lake, the Dallas Arboretum, the Fort Worth marshlands, the Pedernales River, and Caddo Lake.

Working in oil on canvas, Cain approaches these subjects through the American place-painting tradition associated with Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, and Grant Wood, while avoiding nostalgia and spectacle.
