Henry C. Service, J.D. brings legal, regulatory and redevelopment experience to a community healthcare model serving underserved rural and urban areas.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - s4story -- Henry C. Service, J.D., co-founder of The Health Pals® Company (Health Pals®), is combining legal experience, community redevelopment, healthcare access and historic preservation through Med Pals®, a Health Pals® division created to help restore healthcare access in underserved rural and urban communities.
The prototype, Med Pals® of Kansas City, is located in the historic Lincoln Building in Kansas City's 18th & Vine district. The 44,000-square-foot building sits in ZIP code 64108, approximately one-half mile from public housing. The building has been the subject of an $11 million renovation effort intended to preserve its history while creating renewed space for entrepreneurship and community services.
According to Health Pals® leadership, the area has lost at least three pharmacies and two medical clinics during the past decade. Med Pals® seeks to support patients, providers, pharmacies and community partners through community-based healthcare locations. "Traditionally, rural and urban HUB opportunity zones have been ignored by venture capital and private equity firms," said Service. "By partnering my company, Service Enterprises™, with Health Pals®, we intend to demonstrate that providing accessible and affordable healthcare can also be profitable."

Service's legal and public-service background includes private practice, Missouri long-term care regulation, the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office, and federal work involving the U.S. Departments of the Interior and Justice. His experience spans litigation, regulatory compliance, mediation and administrative law.
The model also extends to rural, farming, agricultural and migrant-worker communities that may face transportation challenges, limited provider access, pharmacy closures and a shortage of investment.
"Med Pals® is about more than just opening buildings," says Service. "It is about empowering communities that have traditionally been disenfranchised."
