Free E-Story of the French Revolution, Commemorating Bastille Day, July 14th
S For Story/10383637
SEATTLE - s4story -- In honor of the thousands of women who were imprisoned for their imaginative ways of smuggling salt, author Debra Borchert offers a free download of her short e-story, Not by Bread Alone.
Many causes contributed to the French Revolution, one of which was the obligatory purchase of salt and unfairly levied salt tax: La Gabelle. Appropriate for students and adult readers of historical fiction, Not by Bread Alone takes the reader from the threatened warmth of Madame Dumont's bakery, across border towns, through the probing fingers of lecherous customs agents, and into smugglers' caves as Dumont works to outwit a heartless bureaucracy.
Americans owe it to the French to celebrate Bastille Day since France financially supported America's fight for independence. France's generosity left the county bankrupt, which spurred peasants to revolt against their own monarchy.
