Oncology Nurse Shares What it's Like Battling Blood Cancer From "the Other Side"
S For Story/10664175
With support from the Icla da Silva Foundation, Jolyn is fighting cancer with the same strength she gave her patients.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - s4story -- Jolyn is no stranger to cancer. As an experienced oncology nurse, she has spent years walking alongside patients and their families as they navigated their diagnoses. She has provided care, comfort, and calm during the most uncertain moments of a patients life.
Then the diagnosis came for her.
Jolyn was diagnosed with leukemia, a life-threatening blood cancer. She knew what was ahead, but the reality of being a patient was far more difficult than she imagined. After two years of treatment, she was physically weakened, unable to work, and preparing for a bone marrow transplant. The emotional and financial strain mounted quickly.
"I'm not able to work due to my disease, and social security doesn't get me through the month," she said. "With the bills piling up, even buying food becomes a challenge."
That's when the Icla da Silva Foundation stepped in. Through their patient assistance program, the Foundation provided financial support to help Jolyn cover essential needs during her treatment.

"I feel blessed to receive support from the Icla da Silva Foundation," Jolyn said. "They understand the struggles, and the assistance they provide is critical."
Jolyn's journey underscores the harsh reality faced by so many patients: cancer isn't just a medical crisis, it's a financial one. The support she received wasn't just about paying bills. It meant the difference between going without and continuing to fight with dignity.
As she continues her recovery, Jolyn knows she's not alone. And her voice is now one of both caregiver and survivor.
