Studio Valdivieso Says the Search for Stories That Have Never Been Told Misses What Makes Storytelling Original.
NEW YORK - s4story -- Almost every human story has been told before.
Someone falls in love.
Someone loses a parent.
Someone wants recognition.
Someone leaves home.
Someone comes back.
Someone fails.
Someone tries again.
If originality required discovering an emotion, conflict or human experience nobody had previously encountered, storytelling would have exhausted itself centuries ago.
It hasn't.
Because originality does not require an untouched subject.
It requires an unrepeatable point of view.
Millions of people know what heartbreak feels like.
Only one experienced yours.
Millions know ambition.
Shame.
Family.
Belonging.
Grief.
Hope.
But nobody arrived at those experiences through precisely the same collection of people, places, choices and consequences.
That distinction matters.
More on S For Story
"We sometimes confuse originality with invention," said Studio Valdivieso founder Eric Valdivieso. "You don't have to discover a new human emotion. You have to tell the truth about the one you actually know."
This is why familiar stories can still feel startlingly new.
And supposedly original concepts can feel strangely empty.
The subject is not doing all the work.
The storyteller is.
Perspective determines which detail survives.
Which character receives compassion.
Which contradiction becomes important.
Where the story begins.
Where it refuses to look away.
And what it ultimately believes about the people inside it.
As technology makes imitation easier and creative output more abundant, this distinction becomes increasingly important.
Ideas can be replicated.
Structures can be studied.
Styles can be approximated.
But lived perspective remains stubbornly difficult to reproduce.
That is not a limitation of storytelling.
More on S For Story
It is its renewable resource.
There may be very few stories humanity has never encountered.
But there has never been another person who encountered them exactly as you did.
And that is where originality begins.
