Her writing crosses comparative mythology, sacred cosmology, ancient religion, Celtic and Norse tradition, legendary history, poetry and, more recently, mythic science fiction. Bandrúi: The Female Druids of the Celtic World explores the often-overlooked women of Celtic religious tradition, while Valkyries: Guardians of Valhalla, Divine Warriors of Odin, and Choosers of the Slain examines the complex supernatural women of Norse mythology.

Her latest novel, Elpis: One Tiny Light Remains, takes her work in a new direction, transforming the ancient Greek myth of Pandora and Elpis (Hope) into mythic science fiction and reimagining archetypes such as Zeus and Prometheus within a technologically advanced future.

Oakes' research has also taken her to Iraq and the landscapes of ancient Mesopotamia, with Egypt among the next destinations in her continuing exploration of the ancient world.
