Providing a Cooling System to a Food Production Facility
S For Story/10700421
SYDNEY - s4story -- Case Study: Western Sydney Food Production Facility
Maintaining comfortable working conditions in a busy food production facility can be challenging, particularly where heat from equipment, production processes and the surrounding environment quickly impacts indoor temperatures.
Coral Air was engaged by this client at its Western Sydney facility to develop a cooling solution that improved working conditions for staff while meeting the practical requirements of an active food production environment.
The Challenge
Conditions in the production area were very hot and humid due to the heavy use of steam in cooking and bottling. The facility, constructed of cool room panel within a large warehouse for hygiene and ease of cleaning, had no airflow beyond floor-standing fans brought in by staff. With employees working 10-hour days, summer conditions became excessive for extended periods, making improved airflow a key priority. Any solution also needed to manage cooling costs and maintain strict hygiene standards for food preparation.
The Solution
After assessing the facility, Coral Air recommended an indirect evaporative cooling system. Unlike traditional evaporative cooling, this approach reduces air temperature without adding significant moisture to the supply air — important here, as extra moisture would have worsened conditions for both workers and operations.
More on S For Story
The system provided linear airflow through the work area, aiding insect control, with exhaust air also cooling staff packing pallets outside the clean zone. It uses minimal energy and exhausts 100% of air (no return air), removing cooking smells along with humid air.
Coral Air managed the project from initial requirements through design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Thanks to the system's reduced weight, units were installed on a disused area above the offices, allowing work to proceed while the site remained in full production. Supply air was ducted to required spaces, with larger areas requiring two combined systems for sufficient cooling capacity.
The Result
The new system significantly improved conditions for workers. After the first hot day of summer, the business owner thanked Coral Air for a system that made his team smile and want to come to work.
Every commercial and industrial environment has different cooling requirements. Coral Air combines 40+ years of industry experience with practical, innovative thinking to deliver tailored commercial air conditioning solutions across Sydney and surrounding areas.
