NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - s4story -- Me'acca Mysuth Sheever is a man born to wealth and privilege in this tense thriller. Torn between two family cultures that warred centuries earlier, his father's people declared victory. His mother was on the losing side.

Seeking justice, Sheever becomes a poison master. Being a paid assassin, however, erodes his soul. Accepting the advice of a holy woman, he fakes his death, abandons the life he had led, and begins a new life among his sworn enemies, pretending to be one of them. In his self-imposed exile, he buys a journal and begins filling in its pages. When his journal begins, Sheever is working as a cook in a country far from home. His story begins in the year 516.

Years after Sheever departed, his journal resurfaces. As it is written:

The metal warped as I pried up the lid to reveal a corked ink bottle, a pen, and a leather-bound book … I lifted the cover. Even in the poor light I recognized the fluid style of Sheever's hand. This wasn't a diary of the Royal House. I read the year of the first recorded date, 516, then gazed out at the dimming sky as I understood why I'd been summoned."

As the journal evolves, Sheever becomes more and more sympathetic to the people he wanted to hate. Memories haunt him, as he yearns for the signal that his exile has ended, and he can return home.
