Students Demand GWU Become A Sanctuary Campus

S For Story/10669089
Demand Would Ban Law Enforcement Officers From Its D.C. Grounds

WASHINGTON - s4story -- Some student organizations are demanding the George Washington University [GWU] become a sanctuary campus; which would require it to ban law enforcement officers from ts campus, refuse to cooperate with government efforts which harm students, and provide legal support and financial assistance to fight legal deportation or any federal prosecutions of students.

But even private universities may not be able to bar federal officials from most of the campus which is open to the public; a lesson universities sadly learned when their efforts to ban military recruiters was stuck down by a unanimous decision of the U.S. Supreme Court which rejected and even scoffed at the legal arguments propounded by leading constitutional scholars from leading law schools; as documented by GWU public interest law professor John Banzhaf.

Giving in to such student demands would further imperil a university which has been targeted, and is under attack, by the Trump administration which has just issued a formal legal complaint against it which could lead to the same kinds of funding cutoffs which have already hit other larger universities better able to absorb the financial blow.

It has also suffered a pending lawsuit by current and former students, a highly critical U.S. House report, and a year-long Title VI probe by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

Although Columbia University just expelled or suspended nearly 80 students involved in activities similar to those for which GWU is now risking its federal funding, GWU strangely has reportedly suspended only one student.

Unlike Columbia, which reconsidered its earlier refusal to discipline pro-Hamas protestors, and to now expel them, GWU's response was to try to argue that "we have taken appropriate action under university policy and the law to hold individuals or organizations accountable, including during the encampment."

In an earlier situation when GWU students likewise made seemingly outrageous demands, Professor Banzhaf helped convince his university to ignore them.

Banzhaf hopes that once again his university will not cave in to student demands; especially since to do so would probably further anger the Trump administration and increase the legal jeopardy it already faces.

He also notes that many of the student demands may be nothing more than "virtue signaling" as suggested by a recent study showing that almost all student profess beliefs, and take far more liberal positions, than they really believe.
