Target ALS Launches "Behind Every Breakthrough" Campaign for ALS Awareness Month to Spotlight Progress and People Driving ALS Research Forward

NEW YORK, April 30, 2025 ~ As ALS Awareness Month kicks off this May, Target ALS is launching a new campaign called Behind Every Breakthrough. This month-long multimedia campaign aims to highlight the global momentum in ALS research and the individuals who are driving progress in this field.

The campaign will feature powerful storytelling and scientific insights to honor the personal journeys and collaborative spirit of scientists, people living with ALS, caregivers, advocates, and donors. Through this campaign, Target ALS hopes to shed light on the individuals behind each step towards a future where everyone lives.

Manish Raisinghani, CEO of Target ALS, stated that every breakthrough in ALS research is a result of someone's tenacity. He emphasized the importance of recognizing these individuals and celebrating what becomes possible when barriers are broken down and investments are made in the best ideas.

The vision behind this mission can be traced back to Dan Doctoroff's personal story. Doctoroff, former New York City Deputy Mayor and CEO of Bloomberg L.P., founded Target ALS in 2013 after losing both his father and uncle to the disease. His determination to accelerate breakthroughs in treatment led him to create an organization that breaks down traditional barriers between academia, pharma, and biotech.

In 2021, Doctoroff himself was diagnosed with ALS. Instead of stepping back, he doubled down on his efforts and scaled Target ALS into a global hub of collaboration. Under his leadership, the organization has helped launch 10 clinical trials and numerous drug discovery programs.

Doctoroff shared that having lost his father and uncle to this devastating disease, he understands the lack of hope for those diagnosed with ALS. However, thanks to promising research in recent years, there is now an opportunity to radically change the progression of the disease and improve people's lives.

The Behind Every Breakthrough campaign coincides with two major milestones in ALS research: The Target ALS Annual Meeting from May 6-8 in Boston which will bring together over 850 members of the Innovation Ecosystem, and the ALS Global Research Initiative (AGRI), a groundbreaking global collaboration that aims to expand the diversity and scope of ALS research.

Through its Global Natural History Study and Community-Based Pop-Up Clinics, AGRI is collecting critical data and biosamples from underrepresented populations, unlocking new insights into ALS and ensuring future treatments are effective for all. The organization has also launched a new webpage to provide information on how people can get involved in this initiative.

Throughout May, Target ALS will release a series of stories and videos across digital channels that highlight the people behind the breakthroughs. This includes scientists whose innovative work is redefining ALS treatment development, research participants, donors, and advocates whose lived experiences have fueled unprecedented fundraising and awareness.

Target ALS wants to show that breakthroughs are not just scientific; they are deeply human. The organization believes that hope is not just a theory but a pipeline for future treatments. Currently, one in 400 people will be diagnosed with ALS, with most living only two to five years after diagnosis. But with bold ideas, radical collaboration, and a global commitment to inclusion, Target ALS hopes to change this reality.

The public is invited to go Behind Every Breakthrough this month by following the campaign on Target ALS's website and social media platforms. The organization hopes that by witnessing this progress, more people will be inspired to join in their efforts towards finding a cure for ALS.
