The first Nessie tale was written 1,300 years ago. Now a mile of shore that remembers it is for sale

S For Story/10704943
LONDON - s4story -- Almost everyone has heard of the Loch Ness Monster. Hardly anyone has heard of Adomnán.

Around the year 690, Adomnán, the abbot of the monastery on Iona, wrote the life story of St Columba. In it, Columba faces down a "water beast" in the River Ness, just downstream of the loch. It is the oldest surviving written account of a monster in these waters. In other words, Adomnán told the first Nessie story.

Near Abriachan sits a small, overgrown burial ground that most passing drivers never even notice. Locals still call it Kilianan, meaning "the church of Adomnán". Nearby is an old block of stone with a deep hole carved into it, known for generations as St Columba's Font, where baptisms are said to have taken place within living memory.

That is where The Major's Mile begins.

A mile of shore, untouched for 30 years is now for sale

The Major's Mile is a continuous stretch of Loch Ness shoreline, about 1.6 kilometres long, running south from Abriachan. It's a narrow ribbon of mature woodland between the road and the water, dropping down to a string of hidden gravel beaches. Once you're down by the water, the busy road simply disappears.

It has been in the same family for many years and left largely alone for the last 30 years. The previous owner kept a catch book of the fish he landed, and moored his boat at Temple Pier near Drumnadrochit, ten minutes' drive away. This iconic piece of land has just come up for sale.

The right to fish the most famous water in the world

What makes the mile truly rare is what comes with it. The deeds include a right to fish for salmon and sea trout from one boat on Loch Ness, shared with the other historic owners of the loch's fishing.

Own your piece of the story

It would suit a keen angler wanting a Highland retreat, a family looking for something to hand down, or someone who simply wants to protect a wild corner of Scotland. At offers over £95,000, it's a whole mile of shore with 1,300 years of legend attached.
