Valkyries: Guardians of Valhalla, Divine Warriors of Odin, and Choosers of the Slain
S For Story/10699166
A new exploration of Norse mythology, Valhalla, Odin's warrior maidens, sacred destiny, and Viking tradition.
DARWIN, Australia - s4story -- Independent author Peta Oakes, writing as Gaelic Mac Dubhdara, announces the release of Valkyries: Guardians of Valhalla, Divine Warriors of Odin, and Choosers of the Slain, a new volume exploring the legendary warrior maidens of Norse mythology and their enduring place within the Viking imagination.
Serving Odin as the Choosers of the Slain, the Valkyries occupy one of the most powerful and enigmatic roles in Scandinavian mythology. Riding across the battlefield, they determined the fate of warriors, selected the honoured dead, and guided the chosen to Valhalla, where the fallen heroes known as the Einherjar would feast, train, and prepare for Ragnarök, the final battle of the gods.
Drawing upon the Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, Norse sagas, archaeology, and comparative mythology, Valkyries explores the origins, symbolism, and evolving traditions surrounding these remarkable divine figures. The book examines their relationship with Odin, Valhalla, fate, heroic death, warfare, sacred kingship, prophecy, and the wider cosmology of the Nine Worlds, while introducing readers to legendary Valkyries including Brynhildr, Sigrún, Göndul, and Hildr.

Beyond their familiar image as supernatural warrior maidens, the Valkyries occupied a complex position between the human and divine worlds. They could appear as fearsome agents of battle and death, prophetic women, supernatural protectors, cup-bearers in Valhalla, and figures intertwined with heroic love, tragedy, fate, and transformation. Their stories reveal much about how the Norse understood courage, honour, mortality, destiny, and the uncertain boundary between life and the world beyond.
The book also considers how the image of the Valkyrie developed across centuries of storytelling, from early poetic and heroic traditions to the powerful cultural symbol recognised today. By returning to the surviving medieval sources and placing these figures within the religious and cultural world that produced them, Valkyries seeks to move beyond the modern stereotype and recover something of their original complexity and significance.
Accessible to both mythology enthusiasts and general readers, the volume presents the Valkyries not simply as supernatural warriors, but as enduring symbols of courage, honour, fate, divine power, and the sacred relationship between humanity and the gods.
