Ageing offshore assets in Australia and South East Asia set to lift demand for specialist subsea welding, new LCC Asia Pacific research finds

LCC Asia Pacific® has today released Specialist Subsea Welding in Offshore Oil & Gas: A Maintenance- and OPEX-Led Opportunity Assessment, a sector note examining hyperbaric and wet welding as a maintenance-funded service line across Australian and South East Asian waters.
SYDNEY - s4story -- LCC Asia Pacific® has today released Specialist Subsea Welding in Offshore Oil & Gas: A Maintenance- and OPEX-Led Opportunity Assessment, a sector note examining hyperbaric and wet welding as a maintenance-funded service line across Australian and South East Asian waters.
The note argues that demand for specialist subsea welding is governed by statutory integrity obligation rather than by capital investment cycles — a distinction with direct commercial consequences. Where operators defer capital expenditure, they cannot lawfully defer maintaining structures and pipelines they continue to operate.

Australia's offshore regulator reports that more than half of the production facilities it oversees are more than 20 years old, with some exceeding 50 years. A 2025 government-commissioned estimate placed the cost of full removal of facilities in Commonwealth waters at A$43.6 billion in current terms, covering more than 700 wells, some 7,600 kilometres of pipeline and around 520 subsea structures.
Across South East Asia, more than 1,500 platforms in over 200 fields are projected to cease production by 2030. Much of that infrastructure sits in shallow water — commonly 50 to 70 metres off Peninsular Malaysia — placing it within diver-accessible range at a time when the global trend is toward deepwater and diverless intervention.
"Ageing assets across Australia and South East Asia are creating a maintenance-funded revenue stream that doesn't wait on the capital cycle. For international groups, that's a rare thing to buy into." Nicholas Assef, LCC Asia Pacific's Founder & Managing Director stated.

The note, which can be downloaded at www.lccib.com, identifies the durable barrier to entry as capability rather than equipment: qualified welding procedure specifications, depth-rated habitat systems, operator and class approvals, and a retained population of welder-divers — a scarce and slow-to-train workforce that is simultaneously the moat and the ceiling on growth.
