Independent New York publisher will give away 100 books through libraries, community organizations, and unexpected places across the city

NEW YORK - s4story -- What happens when you hand someone a good book and ask for nothing in return? This spring, Casa Carlini intends to find out.

The independent New York publishing house will launch 100 Books. 100 New Yorkers., a community initiative that puts 100 free books into the hands of 100 people across New York City.

The idea is deliberately simple: Casa Carlini provides the books, and a network of local partners helps get them into the community.

Those partners may include public libraries, literacy organizations, community and cultural centers, bookmobiles, cafés, schools, and other places where New Yorkers gather. The goal isn't just to give books away—it's to create unexpected chances for people to discover something worth reading.

No purchase. No registration. No reading assignment. No catch.

Books will be drawn from Casa Carlini's catalog of more than 200 titles spanning literature, history, philosophy, and biography—some familiar classics, others books a reader may never have encountered.

"Books have become very good at finding people who are already looking for books," said Charles Carlini, founder and publisher of Casa Carlini. "We're interested in what happens when you put one in front of someone who wasn't looking for one that day."

The project launches in spring 2027 with a small group of participating partners across the city. Each will receive a selection of books and decide how best to put them in front of their community—a library offering them to patrons, a literacy organization distributing them to readers, or a café or community center simply leaving them somewhere to be found. A few copies may even turn up in places no one would think to look.

"We're not trying to solve the world's literacy problem with 100 books," Carlini said. "It's a small experiment. Maybe someone picks one up because the cover catches their eye. Maybe they read it on the subway. Maybe they hate it, maybe they love it, maybe they pass it to someone else. That's enough."

Casa Carlini is now seeking a select group of New York organizations to join the inaugural spring 2027 distribution.

The premise stays simple: 100 books. 100 New Yorkers. 100 chances to discover something unexpected.
