ATLANTA - s4story -- Behind every legendary name is a story the public may never know. For author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Ayisha Wilkins, daughter of NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, that story is finally being told on her own terms. In her newly released, self-published memoir, The Price of Privilege, which debuted October 14, 2026, Wilkins pulls back the curtain on her upbringing and the emotional realities of growing up connected to one of basketball's most recognizable figures.
While the world celebrated Dominique Wilkins as an Atlanta Hawks icon and one of the NBA's most electrifying players, Ayisha experienced a childhood she describes as far more complicated than the glamorous lifestyle many imagined. Through deeply personal recollections, she explores family dynamics, emotional neglect, complicated loyalties, and the challenges of navigating her own identity while carrying a last name synonymous with athletic greatness.

For years, Wilkins says she struggled with the assumptions surrounding her upbringing. To outsiders, being the daughter of an NBA superstar suggested access, opportunity, financial security, and a seemingly picture-perfect childhood. But as she reveals through her memoir, privilege and emotional pain are not mutually exclusive.
"People tend to assume that your life must have been amazing because of who your father is," Wilkins shares. "But there's so much more to my story than being the daughter of a famous basketball player. I wanted to tell my story from my perspective, not through the eyes of the public or through the reputation of my father.
The memoir examines the complicated intersection of family expectations, public perception, generational patterns, and the emotional consequences of growing up in the shadow of someone else's success. Rather than simply revisiting painful memories, Wilkins uses her experiences to encourage conversations about accountability, healing, and the importance of speaking up when personal struggles are overlooked.

Beyond the pages of her memoir, Wilkins is building a legacy centered on service and advocacy. She is the founder of Di'Marco's Gifts, a nonprofit organization established in honor of her seven-year-old son, who is autistic and nonverbal. Through the organization, she is committed to supporting children and families navigating autism and other developmental disabilities, with a long-term vision of creating a dedicated resource center for families seeking community, education, and support.
Her message is that the circumstances someone is born into, and the experiences they endure, do not have to determine the rest of their lives. She also hopes to encourage greater awareness surrounding mental health, emotional mistreatment, and the importance of breaking cycles of silence.
