Elaine Knotts's latest picture book draws on her own childhood memory to tell a warm, funny story about a family reunion, a military cousin, and a hilarious anatomical mix-up.

WASHINGTON, Pa. - s4story -- An unwanted family reunion, a tall cousin in a military uniform, and a funny misunderstanding set the stage for Elaine Knotts's children's picture book, Adam's Apple, now available on Amazon.

Told through the experiences of an eight-year-old boy named Adam, the story follows a dreaded family reunion at a local fire hall. Adam expects a boring day filled with kisses and hugs from worn-out relatives he doesn't know, but things change when his mother introduces him to his second cousin, Robert, who has just returned from overseas service. While Robert is a tall, handsome young man in a blue uniform covered in medals, Adam is entirely distracted by the large bump moving up and down in Robert's neck.

When his mother laughs and explains that the bump is an "Adam's apple," Adam panics. He spends the rest of the afternoon worrying that growing up means he will be forced to swallow an entire apple — a terrifying thought for a boy who struggles just to swallow a vitamin. The story resolves with a heartwarming bedtime conversation where his mother gently explains that an Adam's apple is completely natural and requires no fruit-swallowing at all.

More on S For Story
Knotts has said the story pulls from her own childhood curiosity. When she was seven or eight years old, she noticed the bump in her brother-in-law's throat and wondered the exact same thing about having to swallow an apple. The book is a testament to how the simplest childhood questions can grow into wonderful stories.
