Florida-based advocate, Christa Cole, has spent years doing something most people would never attempt
S For Story/10704437
LONDON - s4story -- Christa Cole, founder of the Florida Pit Crew Foundation, has spent more than a decade working around difficult-dog cases and canine behavior. Her own household has included as many as 18 dogs at one time. Today, she manages a large multi-dog household that includes American Bullies and a Pitbull, alongside her two children under 10.
Her dogs are family dogs living in a real home and over the past several years, she has been following the development of dogs from different bloodlines and generations while documenting behavior, socialization, management, environment and physical differences.
"I took what could easily become the worst-case scenario and put it into an environment where I could actually observe what happens," Cole said.
That means managing multiple large, powerful dogs, intact animals, different ages, different temperaments and dogs with different behavioral histories while also maintaining structure, training, separation protocols and individual management.

Cole says the experience has repeatedly challenged the idea that genetics or physical appearance alone can explain how an individual dog behaves.
The issue became particularly relevant again on October 1, 2026, when the UK government introduced a process allowing owners with Certificates of Exemption to apply to withdraw the exemption if they no longer believe their dog meets the government's definition. (gov.uk (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-to-withdraw-a-certificate-of-exemption-for-a-dog?utm_source=chatgpt.com))
Cole believes the development highlights an uncomfortable question about appearance-based regulation.
"If the government is asking an owner to decide whether their dog meets a physical definition, we're already acknowledging that individual dogs don't necessarily fit neatly into a box," Cole said.
Her position is not that dangerous dogs should be ignored.

Quite the opposite.
Cole advocates for owner responsibility, education, training, appropriate management and consequences when individual dogs or owners demonstrate dangerous behavior.
Cole's work is intended to document what happens when dogs are given consistent structure, socialization, management and responsible ownership over time, including dogs that, on paper or by appearance, might cause people to assume the worst.
Her experience has also led her into a broader advocacy surrounding dangerous-dog legislation and breed-specific legislation.
"I've watched dogs from the same bloodlines and same litters turn out completely differently. That's why I think the conversation has to be bigger than what a dog looks like."
