~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced the awarding of seven career training grants to seven schools in Northeast Texas, totaling over $1,934,000. These grants, known as Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, are aimed at preparing students for high-demand and well-paying jobs after graduation. The grants, which are awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), will support career and technical education training programs by providing funding for the purchase and installation of equipment to train over 520 students in occupations such as nursing, mechanics, and truck driving.

In a statement, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the future workforce. "Our greatest resource is our children," he said. "These grants ensure students will gain the tools and training they need to secure good-paying jobs and promising career opportunities." He also thanked the TWC for their efforts in supporting and training the future workforce of Texas.

TWC Chairman Joe Esparza echoed this sentiment, stating that by providing JET grants to schools in Texas, they are able to equip students with the latest technology and provide them with a top-notch education that will prepare them for successful careers. "These grants keep our Texas businesses competitive and our economy growing," he added.

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony held at North Central Texas College's Leo and Mabel Scott Health Science Center on their Gainesville Campus. The event was attended by state and local officials as well as school staff.

The seven JET grants include a $181,574 grant to Cumby Independent School District (ISD) to train 31 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with Paris Junior College; a $131,838 grant to Forestburg ISD to train 33 students as welders in partnership with North Central Texas College - Gainesville; a $350,000 grant to Grayson College to train 24 students as semiconductor processing technicians; a $331,656 grant to North Central Texas College to train 130 students as registered nurses; a $328,894 grant to Paris ISD to train 175 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with Paris Junior College; a $332,450 grant to Paris Junior College to train 60 students as industrial machinery mechanics; and a $277,590 grant to Queen City ISD to train 70 students as welders in partnership with Texarkana College.

Last month, Governor Abbott ceremonially signed House Bill 20 and House Bill 120 into law, which aim to expand career and technical education opportunities for students across Texas. In his 2025 State of the State Address, the Governor declared expanding career training an emergency item for the 89th Regular Legislative Session in order to ensure that Texas has a workforce ready for the jobs of tomorrow.

Funding for JET grants is provided by the Texas Legislature every two years. TWC uses these grants to cover start-up costs for developing or expanding career and technical education programs at public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through JET grants must be used specifically for training students in high-demand occupations.
