Introducing S.Y.K.L Star Step: A Digital Social-Emotional Learning Game from Bask & Buy

TYSONS, Va. - s4story -- Bask & Buy is expanding its SYKL  product family with SYKL Star Step, a digital social-emotional learning (SEL) game designed for children. SYKL Star Step is available to child facing organizations  after-school programs as part of a full SYKL program licensed to facilitator teams. The game is also available for individual users as a standalone consumer app on the Google Play store.

Why We Built It
Most SEL tools ask a child to start by talking, describing their week, naming a feeling, or reflecting on a worksheet without connecting it back to a stimulus to respond to. We wanted to try something different: simulate a first person experience, strategy selection practice, then reflection naturally.

SYKL Star Step opens on a device, inside a short, illustrated game. Rather than being asked to recall or explain a feeling in the abstract, the child moves through situations in the moment and makes choices that shift what happens next. There's no "wrong answer" alarm, but decisions either block or allow movement which is what makes the experience feel active rather than instructional.

A facilitator stays present throughout  helping the child get settled and remaining nearby but does not choose the child's responses or narrate the moment for them. The interaction stays the child's own. If a child raises a safety concern or appears distressed, play pauses and the facilitator's safeguarding procedure takes over.

A short, optional reflection recorded by facilitators follows each session. A child may share something about the experience, respond nonverbally, or simply pass  the game creating the moment, but nothing about the session close is forced.

" The body is the best source of emotional intelligence, and the best practice is play." - Dana Young, CEO and founder of Bask & Buy.

The Benefits

For children
, Star Step offers a repeatable, engaging way to practice social and emotional decision-making through play and immediate feedback  rather than through explanation alone.

For facilitators, each session generates a consistent, observable record: what happened, how the child engaged, and how they reported feeling. Facilitators can see how a child's responses shift across sessions, which supports supervision protocols and helps teams notice when a different approach might be needed.

For directors and organizations, a center-wide dashboard shows participation across every facilitator and child, alongside tools to manage rosters, assign children, and export or delete data in line with compliance requirements.

Throughout, the design intent stays the same: SYKL Star Step and the broader SYKL products are structured facilitation tools, not clinical instruments. They don't diagnose, and they don't replace professional assessment or therapeutic intervention. What they offer is a consistent, comparable touchpoint that supports a team's existing judgment, session after session.

What It Takes to Get Started
Organizations bring tablets or laptops, a reliable internet connection, a consistent session space, and one facilitator per 8–10 children. Bask & Buy handles the rest of the software, hosting, and platform updates, the S.Y.K.L Learn Hub training courses, ongoing technical support, and  data handling.

S.Y.K.L Star Step is available now to beta test groups as partners, and to individual users as a stand alone game  on Google Play.
