Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems Readies X2Griffon Payload for Historic Maiden Flight
S For Story/10697498
Rebranded high-altitude platform set to launch September 19 from Casey, Illinois, delivering open atmospheric data from near-space
CASEY, Ill. - s4story -- Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems (MSDS) today confirmed final preparations for the maiden launch of its X2Griffon high-altitude balloon payload. Formerly known as AmUP01, the X2Griffon represents the culmination of months of Midwest-engineered innovation in lightweight, reliable stratospheric research hardware.
The X2Griffon is a custom-built, 1.01-pound unmanned payload designed and assembled in the United States, with critical electronics soldered in-house to MSDS specifications. Housed in a rugged waterproof ABS plastic Payload Containment Unit (approximately 5.9 × 3.9 × 2.8 inches), the system integrates advanced tracking and live data transmission capabilities for operations reaching well into the stratosphere.
Key Features & Mission Objectives
The launch is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, from MSDS's dedicated facility in Casey, Illinois. September typically brings favorable upper-atmosphere stability across the Midwest, providing an ideal window for high-altitude operations. The mission will target float altitudes deep in the stratosphere while maintaining the lightweight profile that simplifies FAA Part 101 compliance and recovery.
More on S For Story
"This flight is about more than reaching altitude — it's about delivering transparent, high-quality data that anyone can use. Data has always been my language. The X2Griffon will combine proven real-time telemetry with near-space observations to benefit researchers, meteorologists, educators, and our Midwest community. We're pushing boundaries from the heartland to the edge of space and welcome partners who share this vision for accessible public atmospheric data."
— Jeremy David Higgs, CEO & Founder, Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems
