NP Structures completes 2,500-cycle testing milestone for innovative roll-off roof greenhouse
S For Story/10696449
NP Structures has reached a key development milestone after its innovative roll-off roof greenhouse successfully completed more than 2,500 opening and closing cycles ahead of its first commercial installation.
COLNE, U.K. - s4story -- NP Structures has reached a significant milestone in the development of its innovative constant-tension roll-off roof greenhouse system, with its working development model successfully completing more than 2,500 opening and closing cycles.
The achievement represents an important step towards commercial deployment of a new approach to greenhouse ventilation, designed to give growers greater control over airflow and temperature while maintaining consistent cover tension throughout operation.
Unlike conventional roll-off roof systems that typically move only between fully open and closed positions, the NP Structures design can stop at any point along the hoop. This allows growers to fine-tune ventilation to suit changing conditions, while the drive system keeps the roof cover taut across its full range of movement.

The development programme has focused on refining the interaction between the roof cover, drive system and constant-tension mechanism to deliver smooth, reliable performance over thousands of operating cycles.
George Shaw, Design Lead at NP Structures, said:
"One of the biggest engineering challenges was perfecting the relationship between roof movement and cover tension. The cover travels a different distance to the tensioning system, and both operate on different diameter drive tubes. Achieving smooth, reliable operation required extensive testing and refinement to ensure the system remained balanced throughout its full range of movement."
As development progressed, the engineering team introduced a custom-designed aluminium drive tube to improve strength and optimise the way the cover rolls and tensions across the structure. The refinement has significantly reduced cover creasing during testing and is expected to improve cover longevity while reducing maintenance requirements.
Shaw added:

"Reaching 2,500 cycles is a huge achievement for the project. Over the past six months we've refined every aspect of the design, improving performance with each iteration. The result is a system that now delivers the smooth, consistent operation we set out to achieve, giving us real confidence as we move towards our first commercial installation."
The roll-off roof opens progressively from the apex of the greenhouse, allowing heat to escape from where it naturally accumulates. Combined with the ability to stop at any position, the system provides growers with precise, controllable ventilation to help create more stable growing environments.
With more than 2,500 successful movements now completed, NP Structures is preparing for the next stage of development as the technology moves from testing towards its first commercial installation. Supporting images and video released alongside the milestone provide an insight into the development process and demonstrate the system in operation.
