Businesses that stop operating in a state often assume that dissolving the company closes its tax accounts. It does not. Dissolution is filed with the Secretary of State, while tax accounts are held by separate revenue and labor agencies that continue to expect returns until each account is closed individually. The gap produces late-filing notices, penalties, and estimated assessments addressed to companies that no longer operate.

The checklist tool asks the user to select a state and the account types involved. It returns the closing sequence for that state: the agency that holds each account, the form or portal action that closes it, the state's fee, the published processing time, and whether a final return must be filed first. Every line is cited to the state agency's own published material and carries the date the fact was last checked. The tool requires no signup and the output is printable.
