GREENVILLE, S.C. - s4story -- Winter in South Carolina runs short: It's very cold for two months, add a few weeks on either end, and your garage in The Carolinas never get the forced seasonal reset that a Pennsylvania garage gets. Beach chairs from Labor Day are still leaning against the drywall in January, and the box of Christmas lights ends up wedged in behind them.

Then a hard freeze comes through. The Upstate can drop into the low 20s overnight, and you find yourself out there at six in the morning hunting for an ice scraper you have not touched since last February. A garage packed with everything except the car means scraping the windshield in the dark while the neighbor backs out of a warm bay.

Humidity does not take the winter off and slabs hold moisture while cardboard wicks it right up, so a box sitting flat on the floor since October will have soft flaps by March, and whatever is inside will smell like a cooler somebody forgot to empty. Getting things off the floor solves most of it. A couple of rows of overhead racks can move the bulk of it in one afternoon.

Winter brings its own inventory too. If you burn firewood it needs somewhere dry, space heaters come back out, and the leaf blower gets more use in November and December than any other stretch of the year because the oaks around here drop late. None of it has anywhere to go if the summer gear never left. Pool noodles do not need prime shelf space in December.

Pests are the reason nobody thinks about until it becomes one. Mice and palmetto bugs go looking for somewhere warm when the temperature drops, and a garage full of paper bags and open bins gives them cover to work with. Sealed cabinets and lidded containers close off most of the easy entry points.

Timing matters more than people expect. You will not do this in March, because March in South Carolina means pine pollen in a yellow film over every surface and nobody gives up a Saturday to a garage during pollen season. April fills with yard work. By May it is too hot to want to be out there. The cool weeks before the holidays are the realistic window, and the pressure of incoming Christmas storage tends to work in your favor.
