Hatfield business owner launches Q4 giving initiative after cancer affected three members of his family

HATFIELD, Pa. - s4story -- HATFIELD, Pa. — Stand Strong Fencing of Hatfield is donating $50 for every new fence signed and $25 for every repair signed throughout October to the American Cancer Society, supporting a cause with a deeply personal connection to owner Trevor Schermer and his family.

Schermer's mother is a breast cancer survivor, his father is currently fighting stage 4 abdominal cancer and his father-in-law overcame prostate cancer.

"This one isn't abstract for our family," Schermer said. "My mom beat breast cancer. My dad is currently fighting stage 4 abdominal cancer, and my father-in-law fought and beat prostate cancer. I'm glad we get to put real dollars behind it."

The October fundraiser marks the first month of Standing Strong for Our Community, a Q4 giving initiative that will see every new fence and repair signed by Stand Strong Fencing of Hatfield generate a company-funded donation to a selected cause through the end of December.

For Schermer and his wife, Michelle, the initiative is also a way to give back to the Greater Philadelphia community they now call home.

After living in every time zone in the continental United States, the couple chose the Greater Philadelphia area as the place to settle, raise their family and pursue Schermer's long-held ambition of starting a business.

"Starting a business has always been a dream of mine, and I knew Philly was the right place to do it," Schermer said. "Because of that, giving back to this community is something that means everything to us."

The charitable initiative will continue in November, when donations will be divided between K9s For Warriors and a local Philadelphia-area food shelter. Schermer's father and stepmother both served in the Air Force, while his father-in-law and brother-in-law served as Louisiana state troopers.

In December, the company will support One Simple Wish, an organization that helps fulfill wishes for children and young people impacted by foster care.

"Since becoming a dad, I've grown to understand the importance of every kid having something to wake up to on Christmas morning," Schermer said.

The American Cancer Society fundraiser runs through Oct. 31, with Stand Strong Fencing of Hatfield contributing $50 for every new fence signed and $25 for every repair signed during the month.
