What if one bad dream could change everything?

NOTTINGHAM, U.K. - s4story -- That's the setup for Huckleberry Dreaming, the new novel by Brooklyn Beaumont. It's part science fiction, part coming-of-age, and part "wait, did that really just happen?" The story follows Carney Caldwell, a kid from Hailey's Town on the planet Banunus. He's haunted by a dream from his childhood, one about a strange machine, Eastern European voices, and a choice he never made. Now he's grown, and the dream is back to bite him. Hard.
The book opens with Carney at six years old, refusing to step into that mysterious machine. Instead, he bolts. Years later, he's a teenager, running with his gang, the Arch Angels. They're loyal, messy, and often hilarious. They get into fights, tell bad jokes, and cling to the hope that their small town doesn't define them. But trouble brews when Marshall Bexley shows up and shakes the group's fragile balance.

Fast-forward to Carney's arrest. He's accused of assaulting his best friend, who ends up in a coma. Problem is, Carney swears he's a pacifist. Everyone is supposed to be a pacifist after the Leptotronic War, right? Yet his bloody knuckles suggest otherwise. As he sits in interrogation rooms and jail cells, Carney wrestles with guilt, memory, and that nagging dream of the machine. Did his choice as a child fracture reality? Or is he just another screw-up with a good excuse?
The backdrop is Cassaforta, one of the continents on Banunus. It's a place where people fled to escape war and technology, only to find that old problems have a way of showing up anyway. There are history lessons about the Dillinger brothers, time at the creek with the Arch Angels, and parties fueled by bourbon and bad decisions. You get slices of nostalgia and wild future tech all in the same story. Think jukebox hits and space-age physics colliding.

Brooklyn Beaumont has built a world that feels familiar and strange all at once. The kids argue over Buddy Holly and Elvis, even as they live on a planet reshaped by leptotronic science. It's a mash-up that somehow makes sense. And at the center of it is Carney, trying to figure out who he is, what's real, and why his life seems to be a copy of something else.
Huckleberry Dreaming asks the question: how much of our fate is locked in by the choices we didn't make? It's not a neat story tied up with a bow. The characters' lives are messy, confusing, and sometimes funny: much like being a teenager, or, you know, living through interdimensional war fallout.
The book is published by Troubador Publishing Ltd and is available now. ISBN: 9781836283560.
