Atlanta Marks 70th Anniversary of Little-Known Supreme Court Victory That Desegregated Public Golf
S For Story/10685181
ATLANTA - s4story -- During Black History Month, Atlanta will commemorate a largely overlooked civil rights milestone that reshaped public recreation in the city and across Georgia.
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the Alfred "Tup" Holmes Legacy Foundation will host the 70th Anniversary Legacy Celebration at the Atlanta History Center, honoring Alfred "Tup" Holmes, the amateur golf champion whose 1955 U.S. Supreme Court victory in Holmes v. City of Atlanta ended segregation at Atlanta's public golf courses.
The ruling marked a pivotal moment in Atlanta's civic history, opening municipal golf courses and recreational facilities to all residents. Despite its lasting impact, the case remains one of the city's least recognized Supreme Court victories.
The Black History Month event will bring together civic leaders, historians, cultural figures, and community members for an evening reflecting on the legacy of access, justice, and opportunity created by Holmes' legal challenge. Programming includes a reception, historical exhibitions featuring Holmes family archives, and reflections on Atlanta's evolving civic landscape.

"This anniversary is about recognizing a chapter of history that helped change Atlanta, yet is still unfamiliar to many," said Hamilton E. Holmes Jr., President and CEO of the Alfred "Tup" Holmes Legacy Foundation and grandson of Alfred "Tup" Holmes. "My grandfather's courage helped open public spaces to everyone. This celebration ensures that legacy is finally acknowledged and shared."
Proceeds from the event will support the Foundation's Alfred "Tup" Holmes Youth Golf & STEAM Summer Enrichment Program, which will serve underserved youth ages 8–16 from Atlanta and Fulton County. The program combines golf instruction, hands-on STEAM learning, summer recreation, and structured enrichment activities designed to promote mentorship, personal development, and access to opportunity during the summer months.
The Holmes family legacy spans generations of civic impact. Six years after Alfred "Tup" Holmes' Supreme Court victory, his son Hamilton E. Holmes Sr. helped integrate the University of Georgia following a landmark 1961 Supreme Court decision. In 1983, Mayor Andrew Young renamed Adams Park Golf Course in Southwest Atlanta as the Alfred "Tup" Holmes Memorial Golf Course, the only municipal golf course in Georgia named in honor of an African American.
