Gaming Brethren Advocates (GBAMFS) today issued a response to Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders's campaign advertisement depicting "Brad," a young man who spends his time playing video games while receiving public assistance.

GBAMFS considers the advertisement abysmal political messaging and objects specifically to the use of gaming as shorthand for idleness, dependency, and unwillingness to work.

Gaming is a major American commercial and cultural sector whose influence extends well beyond entertainment. Game technologies, simulation, interactive systems and gamification increasingly intersect with education, training, engineering, government, aerospace and defense. The people who play games are not an isolated subculture detached from productive society; they include workers throughout technology, STEM, logistics, creative industries, government and the military.

GBAMFS therefore rejects the implication that a game controller provides a meaningful visual shorthand for welfare dependency.

The organization also believes the advertisement compounds a broader economic grievance among American workers, particularly workers seeking entry or re-entry into technical fields. GBAMFS has repeatedly raised concerns about diminished opportunities for domestic STEM workers and about the disconnect between the demand for skilled labor routinely described by government and industry and the actual opportunities available to workers.

For gamers caught in that environment, portraying gaming as an emblem of unemployment adds insult to injury.

GBAMFS further objects to the political strategy represented by the advertisement. Whatever the merits of Arkansas's proposed welfare-to-work policy, those merits can be argued directly without turning millions of Americans who play video games into a convenient cultural stereotype.

Our position is straightforward: problems involving employment, welfare administration and economic opportunity are questions of public policy. They are not problems caused by gaming.

Government officials should address those issues on their merits rather than reaching for an image of the supposedly idle gamer as a political prop.
