IOWA CITY, Iowa - s4story -- Midwest Microbrew released part two of its brewer interview series, hosted by Henry Nosek, featuring Logan DePover of Reunion Brewery in Coralville and Iowa City, Iowa. DePover discusses his path from home brewer to professional brewer and the craft beer lineup that followed.

DePover grew up in the Quad Cities and began home brewing in college in Iowa City. Around 2013, he landed a job at Back Pocket Brewing, starting on the packaging line and moving into a shift brewer role about six months later. He joined Reunion Brewery in 2015.

Reunion's core lineup leans on hazy IPAs. Tank Puncher, a 7% hazy IPA, is the best seller, followed by Juice Factory, a 6% hazy pale ale, and Pounder, a 5% hazy pale ale brewed with only Centennial hops. The brewery also offers Floral Pilsner and Reunion IPA, a West Coast-style IPA. DePover said the renewed interest in West Coast IPAs has been welcome.

"We brew what we like, and we tend to think that if we like it, other people are going to enjoy it as well," said DePover, brewer at Reunion Brewery. "If we wouldn't drink it ourselves, we don't really plan on putting it in a tank."

Reunion has two projects ahead. DePover said the brewery is planning a collaboration with Clockhouse Brewing of Cedar Rapids on a modern West Coast IPA using a new hop called Superdelic, with a release hoped for late fall. The North Side Oktoberfest is also approaching.

"Trying to make a kind of classic West Coast, but with more new school varieties and hop techniques," DePover said of the collaboration.

DePover encouraged aspiring brewers to persist. "Don't give up if you're trying to get into it. Anybody can. I did."

Reunion operates a brew pub in Coralville with 16 taps and a downtown Iowa City brew pub with a patio. Its beers are also sold at local grocery stores, and updates are posted on Instagram and the brewery's website.
