UK Finance CVs Urged to Show Judgement, Not Just Duties

S For Story/10705342
New guidance from Brendan Hope CV Writing sets out what recruiters actually look for in a finance CV.

GRANTHAM, U.K. - s4story -- Brendan Hope CV Writing has published new guidance for UK finance professionals,
arguing that many finance CVs read as a list of duties rather than evidence of
judgement. Lines such as "prepared month-end accounts" or "assisted with
budgeting" describe what a role covered, but not whether the work was accurate,
fast, or useful to the business, and that gap can cost candidates interviews,
particularly where an applicant tracking system screens CVs before a person does.

The guidance introduces a four-part framework finance candidates can apply to any
CV bullet point: scope, analysis, risk and control, and commercial result. Scope
means naming the size and complexity actually handled: transaction volume,
budget size, entities, team size. Analysis means showing what was interpreted or

investigated, not simply recorded, such as variance analysis or forecasting
assumptions. Risk and control covers what was checked, flagged or tightened, including reconciliation accuracy and audit outcomes. Commercial result means stating what changed as a result of the work, such as a faster close, a reduced error rate, or a better-informed decision.

Applied together, a line such as "reconciled supplier accounts" can become a statement that names the scale involved, what was found, and what changed, without adding anything that was not already true.

"A finance CV shouldn't just say what someone was responsible for," said Brendan Hope, founder of Brendan Hope CV Writing. "It should show what they noticed, what they checked, and what changed because they were the one doing the job."

The guidance applies across seniority levels. Analysts and assistant accountants are encouraged to name the accuracy or timeliness of reconciliation and reporting work; finance managers to name the scale of the function and a specific control or process improvement; and finance directors to name the commercial decisions their finance input shaped, alongside governance and reporting ownership.
