ST. PAUL, Minn. - s4story -- Dr. Artika R. Tyner's book, "Reimagining Police: The Future of Public Safety," has been named a finalist in the 2024 Minnesota Book Awards. The awards are sponsored by Education Minnesota and held each year by The Friends of the St. Paul Public Library.
"I'm honored to be recognized as a #mnbookawards finalist for my latest book, "Reimagining Police: The Future of Public Safety," said Tyner.
Winners will be celebrated on May 7, 2024 at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts, located in downtown St. Paul. Tickets are $22 and can be obtained online now. Individuals also have the option of watching the ceremony via livestream at no cost. The program begins at 6 p.m., followed by the awards festivities at 7:30. The Book Artist Award, Hognander Minnesota History Award, and Kay Sexton Award will also be presented on the same evening.
The Friends of the St. Paul Public Library supports local libraries through fundraising, advocacy and programming. Education Minnesota is a professional voice for educators and students in the education profession.

"Reimagining Police: The Future of Public Safety" explores the history of policing in the United States since the nation's colonial days. Colonial law enforcement was utilized to track down enslaved people and suppress indigenous populations. Policing was a tool of the ruling class to preserve their economic stability.
Being named as a finalist in the Minnesota Book Awards is a measure of Tyner's talent.
