The Philosopher Who Put Certainty on Trial: Q Unveils New David Hume Series
S For Story/10707292
Four essential works challenge what we think we know about reason, morality, religion, and human nature.
NEW YORK - s4story -- What if the beliefs we trust most rest less on reason than on habit? What if morality begins with feeling? David Hume turned seemingly simple questions into profound challenges to human certainty. Q, an imprint of Casa Carlini, presents a new series of four major works by the philosopher whose searching skepticism continues to unsettle—and sharpen—the way we think.
The collection includes A Treatise of Human Nature, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, and Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion. Together, these books examine how we form beliefs, judge conduct, understand ourselves, and reason about the divine.
In A Treatise of Human Nature, first published in 1739–1740, Hume undertakes an ambitious investigation of understanding, emotion, and morality. An Enquiry Concerning Human Understandingrevisits central questions about experience, causation, and the limits of knowledge, challenging the assumption that our expectations about the world rest on rational proof. An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals explores the human sentiments underlying moral judgment, while the posthumously published Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion subjects arguments about God and the apparent design of the universe to searching philosophical debate.

"Hume asks us to examine not just what we believe, but what entitles us to believe it," said Charles Carlini, founder of Casa Carlini. "These books turn doubt into an invitation—to think more carefully, judge more generously, and recognize the limits of our certainty."
The series covers were designed by Nicolle Vargas, a graphic design student at Edmonds College in Lynnwood, Washington. Engraving-style portraits of Hume, ornamental flourishes, and a coordinated palette of dusty rose, blue, green, and lavender create a distinctive visual identity. Each cover connects its subject to symbolic imagery: a brain for understanding, scales for moral judgment, and celestial forms and a clocklike frame for natural religion. The Treatise brings brain, heart, and scales together, reflecting the breadth of Hume's investigation.
The collection invites students, returning readers, and newcomers to encounter philosophy as an active practice of questioning rather than a catalog of settled answers. Bringing these four works together, Q offers several paths into a thinker for whom understanding human limitations was itself an intellectual achievement.
