Where Walls Wander Named Architecture Finalist in the 11th INSPIRELI AWARDS

Designed by Tsz Kiu Felix Wong and Yau Wai Lam, the school proposal in Senegal brings together rammed-earth walls, bamboo roofing and shared outdoor spaces to connect education, play and community life.
MANCHESTER, U.K. - s4story -- T.K. Felix Wong Studio announces that Where Walls Wander, a school and community learning proposal designed by Tsz Kiu Felix Wong and Yau Wai Lam, has been selected as a finalist in the Architecture category of the 11th INSPIRELI AWARDS.
Originally developed for the Kaira Looro 2025 Architecture Competition, the unbuilt proposal explores how educational spaces in Senegal can bring together classroom learning, outdoor play and community participation. Its finalist selection introduces the project to an international audience through INSPIRELI's platform for student architecture and design.
The concept draws on everyday childhood experiences: drawing on walls, playing hide-and-seek and discovering spaces through movement. A continuous rammed-earth wall becomes the organising element of the school, connecting classrooms and communal areas while defining a playground, community garden and arrival space.

Rather than treating classrooms as separate rooms, the proposal creates connections between indoor and outdoor learning. Circulation routes open into courtyards and sheltered gathering spaces, while the garden offers opportunities for cultivation, shared care and interaction between children and the wider community.
The material approach combines rammed earth, locally produced laterite brick and reciprocal bamboo roof framing. Extended roof edges provide shaded thresholds, while perforated brick screens are intended to encourage airflow. Proposed translucent roofing elements made from recycled plastic bottles introduce diffused daylight into the classrooms.
Environmental strategies include natural ventilation, shading, thermal mass, and rainwater collection for reuse in gardening and daily activities. These strategies form part of the design proposal's ambition to create a comfortable learning environment through accessible materials and passive design.
The finalist recognition marks a milestone for both designers and their exploration of educational architecture rooted in place, material character and collective experience.
